The ST group was founded in June 1988 by the merger of SGS microelectronics in Italy and Thomson semiconductor in France. In May 1998, SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics changed the name of the company to Italian Semiconductor Company Limited. STMicroelectronics is one of the largest semiconductor companies in the world. It earned $9 billion 850 million in 2006 and $4 billion 690 million in the first half of 2007.
